Braces

Braces are an orthodontic tool used to straighten and align teeth. They consist of brackets, wires, and elastic bands.

Clear braces are made from tooth-coloured ceramic material. This means they are less visible than traditional metal braces. They are a great choice for adult patients who may not be suitable candidates for clear aligner treatment. Some clear braces still require a clear elastic to hold the wire into place, and this elastic may change colour with time. Your orthodontics will replace the elastics are each appointment.

Braces adjust the position and alignment of teeth by applying gentle pressure to teeth. The changes in position happen gradually to allow for optimal alignment of teeth and the bite.

Braces can cause some discomfort when first fitted and during routine adjustments. The discomfort is caused by pressure being applied to teeth. This pressure gradually moves the teeth into the desired position. Most patients find the discomfort subsides within a few days and rarely lasts beyond a week.

Individuals with known tooth and gum sensitivity can manage pain with over-the-counter pain medication.

1. Consultation: Your treatment begins with your orthodontic consultation. Your orthodontist will assess your teeth, and your goals and set clear outcomes. 

2. Custom treatment plan: Using scans, models and X-rays, your orthodontist will carefully create your treatment plan which will include the appropriate treatment length. 

3. Adjustments: Regular appointments and adjustments ensure progress is maintained towards your orthodontic goals. These appointments usually take place once every 2 months. 

4. Removing braces: Once treatment has been completed, you’ll be ready to unveil your new smile.

The cost of braces varies from person to person. Your individual case complexity and the time required to complete the treatment will also affect the total cost of your treatment. 

Your orthodontist will explain your treatment cost during your initial consultation and provide all the information you need to choose the most appropriate treatment plan.

The most common issues treated by braces are:

• Misalignment 

• Crowding and spacing 

• Overbites and underbites

• Gaps between teeth

• Unmatched dental midlines

The best age to start braces treatment is 12 to 14 years, when most or all of the adult teeth are present. During adolescence, the teeth and jawbones are more responsive to change as both are still growing and developing. This can result in shorter treatment duration when compared to adults.

In some cases, braces treatment can start at 8-9 years old provided there is an indication for early intervention. On the other hand, for some people with severe jaw misalignment, it may be best to wait until closer to 18 years old to start orthodontic treatment, as jaw growth needs to be complete before a full diagnosis can take place. 

It is important to remember that it is never too late to begin the journey towards straighter teeth. Braces can be equally effective at helping anyone over the age of 20 years to achieve their dream smile.

Yes. A retainer is necessary after orthodontic treatment to help your teeth maintain the desired alignment. There are several different types of retainers and your orthodontist will explain which is the best for you. You will also be shown how to wear the retainer and given clear instructions regarding how long the retainer should be worn.

Generally, braces are not covered by Medicare. In some cases, rebates may be available where treatment is related to underlying medical condition/s.

Some private health insurance policies allow a portion of orthodontic treatment to be claimed under ‘extras cover’. We recommend checking with your private health insurance provider. If you aren’t sure you can always speak to your orthodontist during your consultation.
