Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as early intervention or interceptive orthodontics, refers to orthodontic care for children aged from 7 years to 10 years old. From 7 years onwards, your orthodontist can identify any developing orthodontic issues. Early treatment can simplify or reduce the need for more extensive treatment in teenage years such as comprehensive braces, adult teeth extractions and even surgery.

Types of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Braces can create space for eruption of the adult teeth and align crooked teeth.
Expanders are used to widen a narrow upper jaw to create more space for teeth and correct crossbites.
Space Maintainers can hold space for permanent teeth if baby teeth are lost prematurely.
Clear Aligners are used for bite correction and alignment issues.
Removable plates can also be used for bite correction, single tooth correction, and help to reduce any gum and teeth damage from deep overbites.
Lingual holding arches are useful for maintaining space if a baby molar is lost early.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Early treatment can help guide the growth of the jaws and ensure the teeth are coming in properly.

Addressing bite issues like overbites, crossbites and underbites, early treatment can prevent more serious problems such as teeth wear and facial asymmetry from developing.

Early loss of baby teeth can lead to crowding and insufficient space for adult teeth to erupt. Early treatment can help to regain this lost space.

Protruding front teeth are more susceptible to injury, and early treatment can help protect these teeth. Underbites can also be traumatic to enamel, early correction can help to eliminate further wear of the adult teeth.

Early orthodontic treatment can help address and correct harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.

Early treatment can improve the appearance of the teeth and smile which boosts a child’s self-esteem.

Considerations

Your orthodontist will assess your child and determine if any early orthodontic treatment is recommended. The need for treatment depends on the individual’s dental development and specific issues.

Early treatment costs less than comprehensive teenage or adult treatment.

Treatment time can be as short as 6 to 9 months or longer depending on the type of treatment required.
Early orthodontic treatment can be beneficial for many children. Consulting with an orthodontist can provide personalized advice and determine the best course of action for your child.
